Abstract
Loneliness is an emotion that anyone can experience in modern society, which negatively affects mental health and social integration. The purpose of this study is to examine the differences in factors affecting social isolation between groups depending on the presence of perceived loneliness and suggest practical implications to prevent social isolation. As a result of analyzing the 2021 Social Integration Survey, for the group feeling lonely, male, no sense of belongings to the residential area, high school graduates or less, low-income levels, unmarried or divorced/ bereavement, and living in rural areas are the factors affecting social isolation. Groups that do not feel lonely are likely to be in social isolation if they do not have a sense of belonging to the residential area, high school graduates or less, and residents of rural area. For both groups, no sense of belonging to the residential area, lower education level, and living in rural area are the common factors affecting social isolation. It implies that not only approaches to reducing loneliness at the individual level but also policies to improve the sense of belonging at the community level are also needed.
